D (5)o Pest Control
Destruction of ants and wasps nests, beetles, silverfish,
crickets etc., are carried out at a cost inclusive of the cost of
materials with an apportionment charge on the operative's
time.
The charges made in connection with this service
amounted to £33 9s. 8d.
Following the location of 2 insects in timber at a local
factory, the specimens were duly submitted to the Forest
Products Research Laboratory, Department of Scientific and
Industrial Research where they were identified as Longhorn
beetles (Ergates Spiculatus), a type peculiar to softwoods from
the Pacific coast of North America. These beetles do not
breed in Britain and there is no danger of emerging beetles
attacking associated timbers. The management of the firm
was informed accordingly.
D (5)p Burial Act, 1857. Section 25
In accordance with the prescribed requirements of the
Home Secretary's licence, one re-interment was supervised
during the year.
D (5)q Eradication of Bed Bugs
All cases of vermin-infested dwellings which came to
the notice of the Sanitary inspectors during the year were
appropriately dealt with and it is gratifying to record that the
instances are appreciably reducing.
The number of dwelling houses treated are as follows:—
Privately owned houses 6
Corporation houses 6
With a view to obtaining good control, occupiers are
encouraged to reveal any infestation, when every assistance
is given to cope with the menace.
