Ear, Nose and Throat Defects.
Individual defects are shown in Table III (Group III),
others being included in Table III (Group 1).
The arrangements with the Erith District Hospital for the
operative treatment of tonsils and adenoids are still in force.
Visual Defects and External Eye Disease.
Table III (Group II) gives the extent of the ophthalmic
work carried out by Mr. Oliver Walker, L.R.C.P., M.R.C.S..
D.P.H., D.O., who further reports:—
„ Of the total of 1.39 children seen, 64 were boys and 75
girls including 21 from the child welfare clinics. Glasses were
ordered for 70 children and 5 children were admitted to
hospital for operative treatment. These were:
Strabismus 1
Strabismus with Ptosis 1
Meibomian Cyst 2
Lachrymal Obstruction 1
The cases of strabismus are all doing uniformly well. Two
patients requiring special treatments, one for chronic seborrhoeic
blepharitis, and one with a disfiguring injury due to
burns were admitted to hospitals, and three cases of strabismus
and one of ptosis are awaiting admission.
One girl (G.P.) very much disfigured by a marked ptosis
of the right upper eyelid and alternating external strabismus
has had three operations in hospital during the year, and the
ultimate result is highly satisfactory. Her parents are delighted
and the girl is considerably improved in appearance.
The above details illustrate in some measure the type of
work at present being undertaken through this authority's
School Medical Services.
Dental Defects.
In my opinion the care of the teeth of children, even in
the present difficult times, is well worth persevering with and
is likely to pay good dividends towards the general health of
the school population in the future. It is pleasing to record,
therefore, that despite the smaller number inspected this year,
actually more children have required and have had treatments.
There are still, however, too many "refusals" of dental
treatment.
