Malnutrition. Provision of Meals and Malt and Oil.
On referring to table B, and comparing these figures with
last year's, the following facts emerge.
In the first age group, entrants, there were 18.2 per cent.
in A (excellent), an increase of 5.7 per cent.; 64.5 per cent.
were in B (normal), a decrease of 6.7 per cent.; 17.2 per cent.
in C (slightly sub-normal), an increase of 2.2 per cent.; and
there were none in D (bad), a decrease of 1.2 per cent.
In the second age group, 8 year olds, there were 14.9 per
cent. in A, an increase of 1.7 per cent.; 69.2 per cent. in B,
a decrease of 6.8 per cent.; 14.9 per cent. in C, an increase of
4.2 per cent.; and 0.9 per cent. in D, an increase of 0.9
per cent.
In other routine inspections, there were 21.8 per cent. in
A; 63.4 per cent. in B; 13.5 per cent. in C; and 0.93 per cent.
in D.
Comparing totals of children examined with last year's
figures, there is this year an actual increase of 185.9 per cent.
in the number of children examined.
It will be appreciated that roughly one-third of the school
population has been examined, but even so it would appear that
the school children in this borough, as regards nutrition compare
quite favourably with those recorded during the last three
years. If this conclusion is correct it is an astonishing one, and
reflects credit on the various services health and otherwise
responsible, and above all it should not be forgotten that in
our school canteens we now have a very practical means of
"immunisation" against malnutrition in which all school
dhildren should participate. At the moment in this town, all
school children classed in the D and C groups, irrespective of
family income, can have free school dinners.
