With a view to the maintenance of the improvement effected,
the Inspectors re-visit the premises in question.
The disinfestation of Council houses is carried out by the
Surveyor's Department, the methods utilised being spraying
with Solution 'B,' or alternatively fumigation with Cimex
Blocks. All prospective and selected tenants for Council
houses are visited by the Sanitary Inspectors who subsequently
report to the Housing Committee upon the condition of the
applicant's household contents. When the effects are found to
be infested, furniture and other articles are subjected to
Cyanide Fumigation by Contractors, who work under the
direction of the Inspector. This method of rehousing has
proved to be successful.
E(6) I. Cleansing of Verminous Persons.
No cleansing station is provided by this Authority, but
cases requiring treatment can obtain it by arrangement with
Dartford Hospital.
E(6)m. Swimming Baths and Pools.
The Council's open air swimming bath is situated in
Walnut Tree Road, and comprises one swimming pool of
70,000 gallons capacity. There is a slipper establishment with
accommodation for 16 males, and 4 females. The open air
bath is warmed to a temperature of 70 deg. F. by low pressure
steam heating and is sterilized by Chloramine process, i.e.,
the use of ammonia in conjunction with chlorine. The average
yearly attendance is 50,000.
During 1939, 8 samples were taken for bacteriological
examination, all of which proved to be satisfactory.
E(6)n. Mortuary.
The Borough Mortuary is situated in the grounds of the
Erith Parish Church and consists of a receiving room and viewing
room. There is accommodation for 4 bodies. During the
year 1939, 44 bodies were placed in the building.
E(6)o. Schools.
Schools within the district are visited regularly by the
Sanitary Inspectors, and defects if any, are referred to the
Education Committee. All such buildings are supplied with
the Metropolitan Water Board's service.
Further details with regard to schools are to be found in
the Report of the School Medical Officer.
