E(6)f. Camping Sites.
There are no summer camping sites within the district.
There are, however, 4 sites which have been occupied by van
dwellings for a number of years.
Frequent inspections have been made by the Sanitary
Inspectors with a view to the maintenance of circumstances
which are in compliance with Bye-law standards.
No licenses have been granted by the Authority during
the year under Section 290 of the Public Health Act, 1936.
E (6)g. Hop Pickers.
There are no hop fields within the district.
E(6)h. Rag Flock Act.
No premises exist in which rag flock is manufactured, used,
or sold.
E(6)i. Smoke Abatement.
Twenty-three smoke observations were made at various
factory chimneys, but no statutory action was taken regarding
the abatement of nuisances from smoke.
Informal action in respect to the taking of smoke observations
resulted in the installation of a new induced draught
fan at one factory.
E(6)j. Health Education.
Rat week activity was identical with that of other years.
Large posters were displayed, and the public were invited to
co-operate with the Sanitary Inspectors in destroying rats and
mice. Literature as prescribed by the Ministry of Agriculture
on the subject was available at the Sanitary Inspectors' Office.
Routine visits were made to factories, food preparing
premises, slaughterhouses, etc., hunting by dog at one factory
producing 21 dead rats. In addition to advice available at
the Office, free issue of vermicide was also obtainable.
E(6)k. Eradication of Bed Bugs.
During 1939, 34 dwellinghouses were found to be infested
with vermin and subsequently disinfested as under:—
Private dwellinghouses 19
Council houses 15
The infestation of the private houses was located by the
Sanitary Inspectors whilst carrying out housing and other
visits. In each instance, the owner was requested to remove
wallpaper, picture rails, etc., and proceed with disinfestation
by means of spraying, fumigation, or use of a blow lamp, the
work being supervised by a Sanitary Inspector.
