Blind, Deaf and Epileptic Children.
Ail analysis of children falling under this head is given
in Table 111, in which is fully set out the type of education
and treatment received.
One child conies within the blind children group this year.
This child lost her sight following cerebro spinal meningitis.
There are 8 partially sighted children at Public Elementary
Schools and one at a Certified Special School for partially
sighted children.
There are no deaf children in our area, but 4 children who
are partially deaf attend elementary schools.
No epileptic children came under our notice during 1938.
Nursery Schools.
There are no nursery schools provided by this Authority,
but there are four infant schools where nursery classrooms are
now provided, to which, at present, children of 4 years are
admitted. Direct access to the open air, kitchen facilities,
sandpits, separate sanitation and cloakrooms are features of
these nursery class units.
They have been provided at the St. Augustine's Road,
Bedonwell, Crescent Road and Northumberland Heath Infant
Schools.
Mentally Defective Children.
The Annual Report of the Local Organiser of the Kent
Voluntary Association for Mental Welfare is given below.
Home visits have been paid in respect of five cases of the
age of 19 years and under, and withdrawal from supervision has
now been suggested in three of these for the following reasons :
(a) The girl, aged 19 years 8 months, is useful in the home,
is well cared for by her mother and further enquiries
are resented.
(b) This lad, born 20.2.20, has been in regular employment
since 1934 and is now in the position of under-foreman.
Further enquiries appear to be unnecessary.
(c) This lad, now 19 years of age, has had irregular employment
since 1934 and the mother appears to resent
further enquiries.
The two remaining on the list at the end of this year are
both 18 years old. one lias been employed in the canteen of a
local shop and the other is at home, said to be looking after her
father's house.
