A(2). Population.
It will be seen from the summary of statistics that the
Registrar General's estimate of the population of the District
for the middle of 1936, was 36,380, an increase of 620 over
the figure for the previous year.
755 houses were erected during the year, so that building
activity does not yet show signs of exhaustion.
A(3). Births.
The birth rate has maintained approximately the same level
as last year. While the total number of births—510 as compared
to 525 last year—is approximately the same, the total
illegitimate births is 18, actually the same figure as last year.
A(4). Deaths.
The total number of deaths was 412, 255 being males and
157 females. This is after allowing for inward and outward
transfers. The Death Rate for 1936 is 11.324. This again
shows a slight increase over last year, and the increase in total
deaths producing this rate will be seen to be 52. The largest
number of deaths attributed to one cause was due to Heart
Disease, accounting for 104. The next most common cause
was Cancer accounting for 50. These figures closely follow
figures recorded in previous years and they present no unusual
features.
A(5) Maternal Mortality.
The Maternal Mortality rate for England and Wales as
a whole, remains steady at about four per thousand births.
One death was recorded in Erith during 1936, giving a maternal
mortality rate of 1.773.
