Five thousand bookmarks, with sixteen hints to housewives,
were issued to the public libraries for insertion in books
issued during the Campaign Week.
A letter about the Campaign, and a programme of the Public
Meeting and Entertainment, were sent to:
Ratepayers' Associations.
Residents' Associations.
Women's Guilds, etc.
Places of Worship (for the attention of the women's
organisations).
All General Medical Practitioners received a letter enclosing
a small humorous poster for display in their waiting rooms.
By co-operation with the District Education Officer, School
Head Teachers were invited to assist in the Campaign by ensuring
that soap and towels were readily available at all times for children
to wash their hands, and they were asked to encourage the use of
these facilities by organising a routine whereby the children would
wash their hands before meals and after each visit to the lavatory.
To assist in this matter, each school was issued with labels " Now
wash your hands " for display in a position where the children
could not fail to see them on leaving the lavatory.
The Sanitary Inspectors visited every food shop, discussed
the objects of the Campaign and offered the trader an assortment
of posters, illustrations, metal plaques, etc., all bearing on the
subject—" Clean Food."
Three weeks before the Campaign every trader received a
letter reminding him of the event and asking for his co-operation,
especially in the clean food display in his shop. Suitable window
bills announcing participation in the scheme were supplied.
Public Meeting and Entertainment.
The Clean Food Campaign, as a special feature, ended on
Thursday, 17th May, 1951 with a Public Meeting, Entertainment
and Presentation of Prizes and Awards in the Enfield Grammar
School Hall. About 250 people were present.
The Meeting was opened by the Chairman of the Council who
later presented the Awards of Certificates to the successful traders
in the Window Display Competition.
The Chairman of the Health Committee addressed the Meeting
and later presented the prizes to the successful competitors in
the schoolchildren's poster and essay competitions. Each successful
competitor received a 15/- Savings Certificate and a personal
letter of congratulation signed by the Chairman of the Council and
the Medical Officer of Health.
