many intimations of the presence of one or more rats were received.
All these were investigated and appropriate action taken.
A survey of the district revealed very little serious or "major"
rat-infestation.
The ridding of any premises of rats and mice is the legal
responsibility of the occupier of the premises.
A scheme based on the recommendations of the Infestation
Division of the Ministry of Food, is in operation.
The Council employ a trained rat-catcher whose services are
available on payment of the appropriate charges. This service
has been fully used and has proved very efficient. Factories
and industrial concerns have contracts with the Council for regular
servicing of their works.
During the year 877 visits concerning rat-infestation have
been made by the sanitary inspectors.

The marked increase in the numbers this year compared with
1943 is due to the fact that the present figures include many minor
cases of infestation brought to light during the course of bombdamage
repairs.
The following report, in condensed form, gives details of the
work of the Sanitary Inspectors during the year 1944.
The total number of inspections made during the year for all
purposes was 10,372.
