DISPOSAL OF REFUSE.
The depositing of refuse on the old Gravel Pit in Carterhatch
Lane has been far from a pleasant experience, as, owing to springs
being present in the land, a considerable amount of refuse had to
be deposited in water. At the end of the year we were faced with
a continuance of the same trouble. This was a very serious problem.
We were fortunate in that we were able to secure a fair amount of
covering material which helped to prevent much of the nuisance.
SEWER FLUSHING.
This work is carried out by the Department, and all sewers
are regularly examined and flushed by men whose special duty it is.
A further duty is the clearing and repair of sewers, and the
regular examination of all main drains has been maintained.
CESSPOOLS.
A dual-purpose cesspool-gulley emptying machine with two
men is employed in the emptying of cesspools, on request.
This machine is available for the emptying of street gulleys
when not required for cesspool emptying.
A proportion of the cost of the work entailed in cesspool
emptying is charged to the owner or occupier of the property.
SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS.
The arrangement with the Education Committee is still carried
out as regards the conveniences at all non-provided Schools, and
these receive daily attention as regards cleansing by one of the
employees of this Department. The drainage systems of all
elementary and secondary schools in the District are examined by
the Sanitary Inspectors.
At both the Isolation Hospital and the Enfield War Memorial
Hospital the sanitary arrangements are under the supervision of
this Department, and those at the Isolation Hospital are attended
to regularly in accordance with arrangements made by the Joint
Hospital Board, while those at the War Memorial Hospital are
attended to weekly as a voluntary service on the part of the Council.
In addition, a large amount of disinfection has been carried
out at the latter Hospital free of charge.
PUBLIC CONVENIENCES.
The public conveniences at the Parks and Pleasure Grounds,
and also five attached to public-houses, making eighteen in all,
are under the supervision of this Department .
