BIRTHS NOTIFIED.

was 1,323. This includes 381 which were born outside the district.

born during the year.
ASSISTED MILK SUPPLY.

cases under the Assisted Milk Supply Scheme during the year was
as follows
Fresh Milk 11,414 galls. Cost £1,269 12s. 6d.
Dried Milk 2,803 lbs. Cost 204 0s. l0d.

The corresponding figures for 1933, 1934 and 1935 are as follows:—

1935.

Dried Milk3,389 lbs.Cost24313s.11¾d.

The amount of fresh and dried milk supplied free continued to
drop in amount and cost, despite the fact that the tendency of the
Maternity and Child Welfare Committee for the last few years has
been to deal with applications on more generous lines. Consideration
is given to the needs of the unborn child by the provision of
extra nourishment to the expectant mother. For the purpose of
applying the financial scale for the determination as to whether or
not an applicant is entitled to help, the unborn child is considered
as a member of the family. Consideration is also given to the fact
that the cost of living is higher in the winter season than in the
summer.
