MILK.
As a result of the usual inspections of cowsheds under the Milk
and Dairies (Consolidation) Order, 1926, during the past year, it
has been found that the grooming of cows and the cleansing of their
udders prior to milking is receiving proper attention. It is felt
that the former prejudice shown by farmers against these precautions
is dying out, and that they are paying greater attention to the
cleansing of their hands and garments and the grooming of their
cows.
I am glad to say that as greater attention is being paid to the
permanent paving of yards so a more cleanly method of removing
manure is facilitated. More drinking bowls are being installed and
better arrangements for licking salt found. Thus, a large amount of
effort is being shown to help forward a more hygienic condition of
cowsheds and better consideration for the cows. The care taken in
the sterilising of churns and cans, and the covering of milk shows
much improvement.
Whilst the samples of milk taken demonstrate their present
percentage of bacteria, it cannot be suggested that we have yet
reached a perfect stage of cleanliness. There is still much work to
be done in the future and further improvement made, before the
condition of milk can be termed ideal.
