OFFENSIVE TRADES.
The Council has now, with the approval of the Local Government
Board, adopted Bye-laws for the control of the following
trades:—
Blood Drier.
Fat Melter or Fat Extractor.
Leather Dresser.
Tanner.
Glue Maker.
Size Maker.
Gut Scraper.
Manufacturer of Manure from Fish, Offal, Blood, or other
prutrescible animal matter.
Fish Frier.
Fish Skin Dresser.
Dealer in Rags and Bones.
During the year the Council has, in two instances, approved
the establishment of the trade of a Fish Frier, the premises in each
case being equipped with up-to-date appliances, which have proved
most satisfactory, and shew that the trade can be carried on in
populous districts without being a nuisance to the neighbourhood.
SCHOOLS.
There are 22 Public Elementary Schools in Enfield, including
a Deaf Centre—52 departments in all.
The Secondary Schools include the Boys' Grammar School
and the County School for Girls, also one large and a number of small
private establishments.
There is also the Poor Law School, known as Chase Farm
Schools, and a Roman Catholic Institution known as the St. Joseph's
Home for Destitute Boys.
Periodical examinations of the conditions of the public elementary
schools are made by one of the Inspectors, and any defects
found are brought to the notice of the Education Committee and
Managers, with the result that they are usually remedied without
delay.
I consider that the sanitary conditions are quite satisfactory.
With one exception all the schools are supplied with water from
the mains, the exception being the new school at Botany Bay,
which I hope will be connected with the public main in the immediate
future.
The action taken in relation to the health of the scholars, and
for preventing the spread of infectious disease, is as follows:—
If more than one case of infectious disease occurs in a class
that room is sprayed with Formalin and thoroughly cleaned
afterwards.
