Two men are employed daily (and devote their whole time to
the work) to examine and flush the sewers, and any defect or
obstruction is immediately dealt with.
The sewers at Hadley Wood and Hertford Road, Freezywater,
have been extended, and consist of 866 yards and 30 yards of 9-inch
pipes respectively.
New surface-water drains have been laid at the following
places :—
Parsonage Lane to Lancaster Road.
Gordon Lane.
Cracknell's Field to Baker Street.
Painters Lane to Bullsmoor Lane.
Camlet Way, Hadley Wood.
Windmill Hill.
Gordon Road.
High Street, Ponders End to Mr. Hart's Estate, Southbury
Road.
Closet Accommodation.
All the houses in the Urban portion of the District are supplied
with w.c's of various types, the majority being those of the "washdown
"pattern. In the Rural parts of the District the accommodation
consists of water-closets connected with cesspools, earthclosets,
and privies with movable receptacles. I am not aware of
any middens in the District.
SCAVENGING.
Removal of House Refuse.
This work is carried out by the Council's own staff, a weekly
collection being made throughout the greater part of the District.
Part of the stuff collected is disposed of to brickmakers, and the
remainder taken to the Council's depot at Carterhatch Lane, where
it is levelled and covered with earth.
Every week one man in the employ of the Council attends to
some few earth-closets in a rural part of the District.
CESSPOOLS.
The Council has provided suitable vans and pumps, and undertakes
the emptying of cesspools on the application of householders,
a small charge being made for each emptying.
PREMISES AND OCCUPATIONS.
There are no Common Lodging Houses or Cellar Dwellings
in the District.
