"Medical Officer of Health. The remainder proved to be free from
"that disease.
"A certain number were affected with skin disease, a condition
"often found at this time of year after being together in the sheds
"during the winter, but they are under treatment and appeared to
"be on the way to recovery.
"The cows generally were in good condition, and appeared
"well cared for, although many were showing the effects of the
"abnormal cost of food."
9th December, 1912.—"I beg to report that during November
"I inspected the whole of the milch cows in the District.
"I made a careful examination of each udder, and found the
"number of cases of the ordinary diseases of that organ incidental
"to milch cows to be less than on any previous occasion, as a
"result of periodic inspection the practice of disposing of animals
"so affected at an earlier stage of the disease is becoming more
"general. There was also a marked diminution in the number ot
"cases of skin disease which was prevalent at the beginning of
"the year.
"Where necessary I took samples of the milk for bacterio"logical
examination, but in no case was the bacillus of Tuber"culosis
present.
"I consider the Cows, generally, are in a satisfactory condition
"as regards health, and were well kept and cared for."
With regard to the animal mentioned in the first report as
being affected with Tuberculosis of the udder, steps were taken
to see that milk from this cow was not sold or used for food for
animals without being boiled. The cow was soon disposed of by
the owner, and in spite of every endeavour on our part its destination
could not be ascertained.
I have received from Dr. Young, County Medical Officer, the following return of work done during the year by the County Council Inspectors under the Sale of Food and Drugs Acts, in this District:—
