Serious sequelae such as partial collapse of the lung, emphysema
and the reactivation of healed foci of tuberculosis are not uncommon.
During the year, once again, no deaths from whooping cough
were reported and this compares with an average of 2.5 deaths
each year in the preceding decade.
The number of cases recorded fell by 29 to 274 and this is
only the fourth time in the past twelve years that this figure has
fallen below 300.
A new and improved American type of vaccine has recently been introduced for prevention of the disease and it is expected that this will produce a steady fall in the number of cases in future years.
