the prevention of rheumatism. Unfortunately, the immediate
exciting cause of this disease has not been definitely determined
so that our efforts must be directed to the avoidance of what may
be predisposing causes and to the building up of the general health
of those children who may, as indicated by a family history of the
disease, be susceptible.
School children suffering from heart disease are examined
at least once a year to determine their condition and to enable
suitable treatment to be advised. Fifty-seven such children were
examined during the year and in 18 of these medical treatment
was advised. Particular instructions are issued to head-teachers
regarding the care and supervision of each individual case of organic
disease of the heart. Twenty-three cases of functional disease of
the heart were also kept under supervision during the year.

OPEN-AIR EDUCATION.
As noted in the Annual Report for the previous year playground
classes are being developed as far as possible in most of the schools
and even encouragement is offered for their development.
