The sources of pollution, which were many and varied, were
dealt with thoroughly with the result that a considerable improvement
has taken place in the character of the stream. It is hoped that,
when all the drainage works required to be done to remedy the
pollution have been carried out, a much greater improvement
in the condition of the stream will take place.
Drainage and Sewerage.—In the old Borough there is only
a small area of the north-east corner which is not connected
with the main sewerage system. Here, however, only
two houses and a factory are concerned, the former being drained
to cesspools and the latter to a privately owned sewage works of an
efficient character.
In the newly added area of Greenford a considerable amount
of work has to be done in improving the drainage of the old houses
and the general sewerage of the district. The drains of a number
of houses, which are connected to cesspools of an insanitary character,
have to be joined up with the sewers.
Sewage Disposal.—There are altogether four separate sewage
works in the area of the extended Borough, Greenford, Hanwell,
North Ealing and South Ealing Works.
The Greenford Works have already proved to be insufficient
for the district and proposals have been put forward for their extension.
The Hanwell Works operate well, but a better method of
disposal of the sludge will have to be considered at an early date.
The other two Sewage Works act very efficiently.
Closet Accommodation.—Excepting a temporary building
and two small cottages, which are at a distance from the sewer,
the whole of the houses in the old Borough are supplied with water
closets. As a rule there is one water closet for each house.
In the Greenford area there is a certain number of houses which
are still served by means of insanitary pail-closets. These, however,
are being rapidly supplied with water closets connected to the main
sewerage scheme. Very substantial progress in the way of improved
water closet accommodation and drainage has been accomplished
since this area was included in the Borough.
