(b) For Infectious Diseases.—Provision is made for two of the
health visitors, who are trained nurses, nursing infectious cases
such as measles, whooping cough, ophthalmia neonatorum and
poliomyelitis which may arise among children under 5 years of age.
Midwives.—During the year there were 14 midwives practising
in the Borough. All have had a recognised course of training
and possess the Certificate of the Central Midwives Board. Although
the midwives in the course of their work are under the supervision
of the Middlesex County-Council, it is found that there exists, in
general, a good feeling towards the Maternity and Child Welfare
Centre, to which they often refer for examination expectant
mothers as well as infants.
The Council does not subsidise any particular midwife for
maternity work, but when maternity aid is required the midwife
who resides nearest the prospective mother is engaged at the cost
of the Council.
Clinics and Treatment Centres.—The King Edward
Memorial Hospital provides for the treatment of medical and
surgical cases of both sexes. Private wards are also available for
those who are unable for pay for accommodation in a Private
Nursing Home, but who are in better circumstances than those
admitted to the general wards. There is no outdoor department
in connection with the hospital, but accident cases are regularly
dealt with whether requiring indoor treatment or only temporary
attention. A Dispensary, conducted on provident principles,
offering medical and surgical attention for non-insured persons at
their own homes, is organised in connection with the hospital.
The Tuberculosis Dispensary, instituted by the County Council
for Ealing and the neighbouring districts, is situated in a convenient
position in Green Man Passage, West Ealing.
There is no Dispensary for Venereal Diseases in Ealing, but
medical practitioners may, under the scheme of the County Council,
refer cases for diagnosis and treatment to certain of the London
Hospitals, the nearest to the Borough of Ealing being the West
London Hospital at Hammersmith.
