All food premises are regularly inspected and during the year 3,324 visits were paid.
In addition to numerous verbal warnings and suggestions to management and staff
during these routine visits, 141 informal notices were served upon owners or occupiers.
A Council house was found to be used immediately before Christmas for the sale of
meat and poultry. All food found on the premises was fit for human consumption.
The practice was stopped forthwith.
110 inspections were carried out in connection with itinerant vendors and stalls;
much of this work, especially in respect of itinerant vendors, is done at week-ends.
The inclement weather during the summer months reduced considerably the number of
itinerant vendors at week-ends.
The position under the Food and Drugs Act, apart from registrations in respect of
ice cream, is as follows:—
37 butchers' premises and eight other food premises are registered for the
preparation or manufacture of sausages or potted, pressed, pickled or preserved
food. To these registered premises 571 visits were paid.
21 fish shops are registered for frying. To these 241 visits were paid.
Milk
All milk distributed in Dagenham is produced and bottled outside the Borough.
Eight premises are registered as dairies. The number of persons registered as distributors
is 67; of these 12 operate from premises outside the Borough, the remaining 55
distributors operate from 69 premises situate in the Borough. 88 visits were paid to
dairies and distributors' premises.
During the year 75 samples of milk were taken from roundsmen in the Borough
and submitted for bacteriological examination. Four samples failed to pass the methylene
blue test, but in each case the maximum atmospheric shade temperature during the
tests reached or exceeded the permissible limit of 65 °F.
Ice Cream
The total number of registered premises is 137; of this number two are registered
for the manufacture of ice cream. 208 visits were paid to these premises. During the
year 10 applications for the storage and sale of ice cream were granted. Two applications
for the sale of wrapped ice cream from launderettes were refused.
29 inspections in connection with itinerant vendors were carried out.
During the year 45 samples of ice cream were submitted for bacteriological
examination; they were graded as follows:—
