1,536 live births were notified during the year, there being 809 males and 727
females. There is an increase of total births from 1,432 in 1957t0 I?53^. The corrected
birth rate per thousand population was 12.52 compared with 16.4 for England and Wales.
The illegitimate birth rate continues to be very slow, being only 3.45 per cent of
total live births. The rate of illegitimate stillbirths is 6.67 per cent of total stillbirths.

Of the deaths of non-residents occurring in the district, 180 took place at Rush
Green Hospital and 12 at Dagenham Hospital.
Of the deaths of local residents taking place outside this area, most occurred in
institutions. Of these 240 occurred at Oldchurch Hospital; 55 at St. George's Hospital,
Hornchurch; 15 at King George Hospital, Ilford; 14 at London Hospital; 5 at the
London Chest Hospital; 5 at Ilford Isolation Hospital; 5 at St. Andrew's, Billericary;
4 at East Ham Memorial Hospital and 4 at Victoria Hospital, Romford.
