Alderman (Mrs.) A. E. P rendergast introduced the Mayor of Dagenham, Councillor
R. Blackburn, J.P., who welcomed Alderman and Mrs. Glenny, and the Chairman of the
Essex County Council, Sir Frank Foster, C.B.E., J.P.
Alderman Glenny in his opening speech paid tribute to the helpful co-operation
of Dagenham Council and the Health Area Sub-Committee, particularly in all matters
requiring joint negotiation between the County and the Borough. He praised the part
played by Dagenham Health Area Sub-Committee's Chairman, Alderman (Mrs.)
Prendergast, particularly the gracious and charming way in which she persuaded the
County Council of Dagenham's needs. This clinic is a lasting example of this untiring
work.
After the Mayor had thanked Alderman Glenny for opening the clinic, of which
Dagenham was justly proud, he stressed that it is local knowledge of an area that makes
local government most effective, and he presented Alderman Glenny with an illustrated
book of the Borough. Mrs. Prendergast added to the floral gaiety of the occasion by
presenting Mrs. Glenny and Mrs. Blackburn with bouquets. There then followed a
tour of the clinic which was shown in all its working aspects. The guests saw the work
of an infant welfare clinic, and the methods used in training in relaxation classes. Children
were having speech therapy, and a tape recording of speech showing improvement
with therapy was heard. A new venture is the audiometric testing of children with
suspected deafness, and school nurses demonstrated the technique used in assessing
degrees of deafness.
