Each member of the staff has the opportunity to engage in health education as an
integral part of the daily work of the department; all are encouraged to do so. In
connection with pre-arranged talks or discussion groups, visual aids such as film strips,
flannelgraphs, models, etc., are available for illustrating the many and varied aspects of
the work. Perhaps the most important part of this work is done by the officer discussing
with an individual in the home, clinic, shop, etc., some appropriate aspect of personal or
environmental hygiene.
It is becoming increasingly true in the public health field that the immediate work
is not the discovery of something new and sensational, but the education of the people to
use the facilities already provided for them and observe the known and proven ways of
maintaining good health of mind and body. Prevention is always better than cure and
the health education activities of the department seek to bring this simple but vital axiom
into every day living.
All local organisations have been informed that members of the departmemt can
provide talks and discussions on a number of varied subjects with appeal to local residents
of all ages; the diary of talks given below indicates the response.
