1,581 live births were notified during the year, there being
776 males and 805 females. There is an increase of total births
from 1,501 in 1955 to 1,581. The corrected birth rate per thousand
population was 12.78 compared with 15.7 for England and Wales.
The illegitimate birth rate continues to be very low, being
only 3.23 per cent of total live births. The rate of illegitimate
stillbirths is 5.71 per cent, of total stillbirths.

Of the deaths of non-residents occurring in the district, 189
took place at Rush Green Hospital, and 15 at Dagenham Hospital.
Of the deaths of local residents taking place outside this area,
most occurred in institutions. Of these 225 occurred at Oldchurch
Hospital ; 18 at King George Hospital ; 20 at the London
Hospital ; 8 at the Ilford Isolation Hospital ; 6 at Harold Wood
Hospital ; 5 at Guy's Hospital ; 4 at Whipps Cross Hospital and
9 at the Victoria Hospital, Romford.
The crude death rate of 7.25 when corrected becomes 12.54
and compares with 11.7 for England and Wales.
