have been warned that the water should not be consumed
without previously having been boiled for 20 minutes.
As it is anticipated that this land will soon be developed
and main water made available, it would not appear to
be necessary to take further action at the present time.
Seven other samples of water were taken; four
proved satisfactory and three unsatisfactory.
Drainage and Sewerage and Sewage Works
Extensions and Closet Accommodation.
Under this heading I am indebted to the Borough
Surveyor for the following information:—
"At the commencement of year there were 46
cesspools in the district: during the year five of
these were connected to the sewer.
The cesspools were emptied by the Shelvoke &
Drewry mechanical emptier, which removes 750
gallons per load. The total number of loads
emptied was 1,103.
30 cesspools are situated in the northern part of
the district and 11 in the south and east.
At the commencement of the year there were
38 premises having earth closets. During the year
this number was decreased to 33, due to demolition
and connection to the sewer. The number of
closets to empty was 39, and the number of visits
made was 1,897. The total number of clearances
during the year was 2,133. The cleansing of earth
closets is a weekly service, carried out by the
Shelvoke & Drewry cesspool emptying machine.
The sewage purification works are situated at
Rainham, Essex, and discharge into Rainham
Creek, opposite Erith on the River Thames.
