185 cases were referred to hospital for confinement
under the Council's scheme, of whom 152 were admitted
to the East End Maternity Hospital, eight to Charing
Cross Hospital and 25 to Oldchurch Hospital. The cost
to the Council for these patients, after the receipt of the
patients' fees, amounted to £858 12s. 9d.
The total number of attendances made by the
1,043 women was 5,556.
As will be mentioned later, arrangements are now in
force for the attendance at the ante-natal clinic of the
midwife who has been engaged for the confinement.
Hospital Cases.
Of the 362 cases referred to hospital, 252 were
admitted on other than medical grounds. 185 were
assisted under the Maternity and Child Welfare Scheme.
Abnormal cases are referred to their own medical
attendants, or where the patient desires, and her
condition demands, arrangements are made for her
confinement to take place in an institution. When
patients are referred for admission to Oldchurch
Hospital they continue to attend the Consultant at
our Ante-Natal Clinic, unless some special investigation
such as an X-ray examination is required, when they
attend at Oldehureh Hospital for that purpose.
Furthermore, the Consultant sees on behalf of any local
medical practitioner, any patients referred to him by
them.
Post Natal.
There is a tendency for mothers to take advantage
increasingly of the Post-Natal examinations; 138
mothers took advantage of this service during the year.
