Consultant Obstetrician.
The Consultant Obstetrician has been called into
consultation on 21 occasions. This service is very much
valued and there is no doubt that the efficiency of the
maternity and child welfare organisation has been much
enhanced by this addition. Originally patients were
requested to refund to the Council a portion or the
whole of the assessed cost of each consultation, but
having in mind that patients in certain instances might
hesitate to call in the survices of the Consultant for
fear of incurring a debt, the Council decided that these
emergency consultations should be free to all except
those who would, in the ordinary course of events, call
in a Consultant in a private capacity.
Emergency Obstetric Unit.
A unit of this nature has been inaugurated whereby
the services of the Council's Obstetric Consultant and a
trained nurse can be obtained in the patient's own
house when an emergency arises which would prevent
her from being safely removed to hospital. Apparatus,
blankets and hot water bottles in readiness for this
purpose are kept at York House.
Ante-Natal Services.
Ante-Natal Clinics.—During the latter part of the
year, three weekly ante-natal sessions were held at the
Becontree Clinic, three at the Dagenham Clinic, two at
the Five Elms Out-Patient Department and a new
weekly clinic was commenced at York House. In
addition, the Chadwell Heath Clinic was held twice
monthly and at Rush Green once monthly.
At, the Five Elms Out-Patient Department the
Consultant Gynaecologist paid fortnightly visits
throughout the year, seeing a total of 200 women who
made 315 attendances.
