INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD
(a) Milk Supply.
There are 55 retailers of milk in the district, including eight
company distributing centres. The following is a classification
of the milk retailed :—
Ungraded Milk 34
Grade " A" 2
Grade " A" (T.T.) 6
Grade " A" Pasteurized 2
Certified 2
Pasteurized 9
Sterilised 12
Carton 15
Eight retailers were registered during the year, while six
discontinued business. Eight dairies were registered and four
businesses changed hands. There are now only four cowkeepers
in the district, two having discontinued during the year.
A firm of dairymen with an address outside the district applied
to be registered as Retail Purveyors and Wholesale Dealers, 3rd
June, 1931. Their connection with this district ceased 9th June,
1934.
During this period this firm changed its name seven times,
presumably as a means of escape from fines inflicted by the Police
Court. This change of name also made it necessary to commence
all over again, especially with respect to analysis.
The Council were fortunately able to obtain convictions—
in spite of the rapid changes of designation—in six instances, viz.,
for using unregistered premises as a dairy, two instances, fines
50s. 0d. and £5 ; for filling bottles in the street, two instances,
fines 20s. and 40s. 0d. For reconstituting milk, £5 and £5 5s. 0d.
costs ; for obstruction, two defendants, £5 each.
Twenty-five samples of milk were purchased from this firm for
Bacterial analysis. Twelve of these were not satisfactory by reason
of dirt or presence of B. Coli in large quantities. Special reports
were made with respect to these samples.
It was also found necessary to communicate frequently with
the adjoining authorities regarding the activities of this firm, also
with the Milk Marketing Board and the Food and Drugs Authority
with respect to the quality of the milk retailed.
