HOME TUITION
If a child is not fit to attend any school, usually due to a temporary
medical condition, tuition is provided at home. Such children are returned
to school as quickly as possible, since children need social contact for
normal development, During the year 27 children were recommended for home
tuition and 8 were still receiving this at the end of the year.
UNSUITABLE FOR EDUCATION IN SCHOOL
This will be the last year in which children are classified under the
above heading. As referred to earlier the Education (Handicapped Children)
Act, 1970, came into effect on 1st April, 1971, and from that date all
retarded children were similarly classified as educationally subnormal.
Before the operation of the Act five children were ascertained as unsuitable
for education in school under Section 57 of the Education Act, 1944 (as
amended by the Mental Health Act, 1959). Two of these children were already
attending Coldharbour School, the former Junior Training Centre, two were
not yet in school, and one child had had a trial at the Day School for Physically
Handicapped Children. All were referred tothe Health Committee, and
the three children not attending Coldharbour School were offered places
there.
