In July, 1963 the Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act
came into operation - an Act to make fresh provision for securing
the health, safety and welfare of persons employed to work in
office and shop premises and certain railway premises. The Act
provides for the registration and inspection of this type of
premises and there are many provisions for the making of regulations
which will be made by the Minister of Labour to become
operative during the year 1964. There are approximately some
6,500 premises in Croydon to which the Act applies. The implementation
of these regulations will call for an increase in
staff, and the resultant responsibilities will be undertaken.
I would wish to express my thanks to the members of the
various Committees for their kindly support, and to the staff of
my Department for their help during the year under review.
