Social Work
Development of the social work side of the mental health
service has been maintained. At the end of 1962 patients receiving
assistance from the social workers numbered 642 and by the
end of 1962 this figure had increased to 848. In the course of
the year 838 cases were referred for help and the social workers
were in touch with over 1,450 cases. One social worker returned
from training during the year and an additional Mental Welfare
Officer was recruited.
A training officer was appointed to supervise students
placed for practical work from the newly started general training
course at the Croydon Technical College. Students from
university courses in Social Science and Mental Health and from
the National Institute for Social Work Training have also
visited the service for varying periods of time.
Visitors to the service, including students, totalled 48 in
the year representing a wide range of medical and other professional
interests. There were several overseas visitors from
eight different countries.
