WORK OF THE PUBLIC HEALTH INSPECTORS
George Grieve, P. R. S. H., F. A. P. H.I.
Chief Public Health Inspector
A feature of the year's work has been the progress in Smoke
Control, in that the Council during the year made the Croydon
(No. 2) and Croydon (No. 3) Smoke Control Orders to cover areas of
the Borough abutting that covered by the Croydon (No.1) Order.
Thus by October 1962, some 8,500 dwellings and 1,100 industrial,
commercial etc. premises in the southern part of the Borough
will be fully smoke controlled.
The current five year programme of slum clearance is proceeding
and up to the end of the year, 160 of the 183 houses included
in the programme had been either demolished or closed.
The proposals for the next five years provide for an additional
273 houses to be dealt with.
There has been no reduction in the amount of slaughtering at
the Abattoir, and 100 per cent meat inspection has been attained
only by the inspectorate attending in the evening and at weekends.
Some progress has been made regarding the provision of a
new Abattoir, in that a site which is favoured by the present
users, is likely to be made available during the next twelve
months. Whilst on meat inspection I think one important fact
should be noted, namely the victory over tuberculosis in cattle
made possible by the Government's eradication schemes. Meat
inspection at an Abattoir like ours shows the effectiveness of
such schemes, in that in 1950, with a throughput of cows somewhat
similar to 1960, the percentage found affected with tuberculosis
was 28.6 per cent whilst in 1960 it was but 0.4 per cent
The statistical tables and comments in this report indicate
the amount and variety of work which has been done by the staff
under my control, and I wish to record my grateful thanks to
them for their efforts during the year.
