COUNTY BOROUGH OF CROYDON
ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
AND
PRINCIPAL SCHOOL MFDICAL OFFICER
FOR THE YEAR 1960
To the Chairman and Members of the Health Committee
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
The following comments summarize some of the items in my
Report.
Statistics
The Registrar General estimates an increase of nearly 700 in
the population of the Borough.
The Birth rate was the highest since 1949.
The Death rate and the Infant Mortality rate were less than
in 1959.
There was only one Maternal death, but the example of 1958
when a "Nil" report was achieved is still the target.
Coronary disease, Cancer, and Chronic Bronchitis were the
principal causes of death, notably in the age range 45 - 64
years. In striking contrast, deaths from infectious diseases
(including Tuberculosis) for all ages, totalled only 30. There
was a record high number of 40 deaths from motor vehicle
accidents.
The percentage of illegitimate births was a fraction less
than last year, but still remained over 7%.
