Births.
The births registered were 3,188 legitimate and 387 illegitimate.
The birth-rate consequently was 17.8. For England and
Wales and in the Great Towns the rates were 16.1 and 19.1.
The illegitimate births in Croydon were 10.6 of the total,
compared with 7.7 in 1944; 7.8 in 1943; 7.5 in 1942; 6.3 in 1941;
and 5.3 in 1940 and 1939.
The live male births numbered 1,849, the female 1,726,
being a proportion of 1,071 males to 1,000 females.
The subjoined table gives the vital statistics for the Wards
in the Town. It is seen that the Wards with the highest birthrates,
were Addington (26.0) and South Norwood (20.4). Those
with the lowest were Norbury (9.6) and Upper Norwood (10.1).
Deaths.
The deaths numbered 2,513, compared with 2,854 in 1944.
For 1945 the death-rate was 12.5; for 1944 it was 15.1. The
death-rate for England and Wales was 11.4, and for the Great
Towns 13.5. For London the death-rate was 13.8.
There were 165 inquests held by Coroners in respect of
Croydon residents during 1945 and 185 findings by Coroners
after post-mortem examination without inquest.
Wards with the highest death-rates were Central (16.3),
South (15.0), Whitehorse Manor (14.5), and Bensham Manor
(14.1). Lowest: West Thornton (9.0), Addington (9.5), and
Waddon (9.6).
