As stated above, 1,222 cases completed their treatment and
were re-Schicked three months later. One of the cases on which
T.A.F. was used was still positive after three injections, which
gives a percentage Schick negative rate for T.A.F. of 99.9%. Six
of the cases given T.A.M. were positive, which gives a Schick
negative conversion rate for T.A.M. of 99.5%.
The case that had had T.A.F. was given a further injection,
and on re-test three months later was negative.
Five of the cases that had received T.A.M. were given a
further injection, and on re-test in three months were all negative.
One of these was a 1936 case.
The sixth case was one which was positive after the ordinary
course of T.A.M. Another injection of T.A.M. was given, and
the reaction was still positive. A further injection of T.A.M.
was given, and the Schick Test still revealed a faint positive reaction.
The child is now having a further course of three injections
of T.A.M. It may be that this child belongs to the class
that has been called "non-antitoxin producers." This name
has been given to the small number of cases in which it is found
very difficult to produce an acquired immunity to diphtheria as
tested by the Schick Reaction.
