SECTION I.—POPULATION.
The population in June, 1926, as estimated by the RegistrarGeneral,
was 205,900, an increase of 6,600 on the previous year,
and of 15,023 since 1921.

BIRTHS.

3,477 births were registered during the year, grouped as follows in respect of sex and legitimacy (see Appendix, Table 1.):

The following table sets out a comparison between the birth rate for Croydon, for London, for the large towns, and for country as a whole during recent years:—

The birth-rate per 1,000 of the population was thus 16.9. The
successive birth-rates in the five years 1922-6 were: 18.2; 17.4;
17.6 ; 17.1, and 16.9.
Of the total Croydon births in 1926, 4.2 per cent. were illegitimate,
compared with 3.8 per cent. in 1925.
DEATHS
2,269 deaths of Croydon residents were registered in respect
of the year 1926 (Appendix, Table 1.), giving a death-rate of 11.0
per 1,000 head of population. The corresponding rates for the
five years 1922-26 were : 12.4; 10.4; 11.6; 10.9; 11.0.
