COUNTY BOROUGH OF CROYDON.
ANNUAL REPORT.
OF THE
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH.
AND
SCHOOL MEDICAL OFFICER.
For the Year 1925.
I beg to submit to the Council my report on the health and
sanitary circumstances of the Borough during the year 1925.
I he present report, in accordance with the request of the
Ministry of Health, is a "survey" report, attempting
some general survey of the Public Health activities of the
borough, with particular reference to their extension during
the past five years. It has been the practice of my
predecessors, which 1 have followed, to give a full
annual statement of the work, so that the form of the report is not
materially different from that adopted in previous years.
There has been steady expansion of Public Health work during
1925, accompanied by consolidation of developments initiated
during the previous year. Progress was made with the provision
of the admirable clinic premises in Lodge Road, which were taken
into occupation in January, 1926; and with the extension of Cheam
Sanatorium, which was opened on the enlarged scale in April,
1926.
The year was marked by a generally satisfactory level of
health, the only feature calling for special note being an outbreak
of food-borne paratyphoid fever, an account of which is given in
the report. Attention may also be directed to an analysis of the
Croydon death-rates at various ages and for various diseases over
a long series of years; to a report dealing with the difficult question
of birth control; and to a section in the school medical report, in
which an analysis is attempted of the changes in the health of the
school child during recent years, and of existing factors inimical to
his well-being and educability.
H. P. NEWSHOLME,
Mcdical Officer of Health.
