state they intend to do. As a rough test 266 children were
re-examined whose parents had made the above statement, 20 were
in good condition, 80 had less than four teeth decayed, 166 had four
or more teeth decayed. It would appear, therefore, that in most
of these refusals the unfortunate children receive no treatment
whatever.
Special Cases.
516 " special " cases received treatment. These comprised
(a) children referred by the School Medical Officer as urgently
requiring attention, (b) children who required dental treatment
prior to having an operation for the removal of their tonsils and
adenoids, (c) cases sent by the Tuberculous Officer.
Special Forms of Treatment.
1.—A number of children sustained injuries to the teeth
through falling in the school playgrounds. The injuries were
mostly fractures of the front permanent teeth, and necessitated root
treatment and crowning, which improved the appearance of the
patient and prevented future disfigurement. This procedure has
been carried out in 6 cases.
2.—Three cases of Cleft palate were examined. In two cases
the parents were advised, and treatment deferred. The remaining
case, a boy of twelve years, who owing to this defect has been
unable to attend school, is at present under treatment.
3.—Simple regulations, to effect the straightening of
individual teeth, have been carried out by means of ligature-wire
and inclined planes. The total number of such cases was 14.
Compared with the previous year, the total number of treatments
given, shews an increase over and above the increase in the
number of treatment sessions : —
There was also a marked increase in the number of gas cases
and " other operations."
