yet say with what result. This is an extreme illustration of a case
in which the mental condition in large measure succumbed
to the strain; it is not difficult to imagine other cases in which,
with partial victory oven the intruding element, a warped character
results.
I have deliberately entered into this somewhat elaborate statement
of the influences of the cinema, because I feel that the present
unhealthy type of film is to an appreciable extent undoing the work
of parents and of education authorities in building up children with
sturdy characters. Happily there are signs that a healthy type
of film capable of being as beneficial as the other is harmful is
being more frequently displayed. By co-operative action education
authorities could do much to hasten the day when the type of film
here criticised would not be allowed in any picture-theatre.
STAFF.
1.—Medical.
(a) Whole-time Officers.
The Medical Officer of Health is also School Medical Officer,
and in that capacity supervises the work of the school medical
service.
One Deputy and three Assistant Medical Officers each devote
a portion of their time to school medical work.
(b) Part-time Officers.
The following part-time specialists are engaged in school
medical work for the Education, Committee:—One X-rav
specialist, one ophthalmic surgeon, and a rota of eight surgeons
undertaking nose and throat work.
2.—Dental.—One whole-time and one part-time dental
surgeon. The latter was replaced by a second whole-time
dental surgeon in March, 1926—to take up duty in April—in connection
with the extension of the dental scheme.
3.- Nursing.— Fourteen health visitors are each allotted a
district, coinciding in area with a ward of the borough, in which
they are responsible for every aspect of health visiting under the
Education and the Public Health Committees.
In addition to these, one health visitor attends the dental clinic,
and a second undertakes work in connection with the minor
ailments clinic and the throat clinic, with general supervision of
the various clinics now in Lodge Road; while two of the district
health visitors undertake work at the X-ray clinic and the light
clinic.
