Public Health Department,
Town Hall, Croydon.
26th September, 1919.
To the Education Committee.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to submit the report of the school medical services in
Croydon for the year 1918.
During the year the greatest endeavour has been made
to maintain the school medical work at the highest possible level
and although the volume of work done is of necessity somewhat
less than would be in peace time the quality of the work has
certainly been successfully maintained. I am especially pleased
to record the successful working of the new clinic for the treatment
of tonsils and adenoids. This clinic has thoroughly justified its
establishment and forms a very important and valuable addition
to out medical services.
A new feature of the report also is the inclusion of the report
of the Organiser of Physical Training as advised by the Board's
Chief Medical Officer. I would take this opportunity of noting
the exceedingly good results which Miss Appleton obtains at the
Spinal Remedial Class and feel confident that the importance of
the opportunities of physical training in schools cannot be too
greatly emphasised as an important contribution to the physical
and mental welfare of the children.
At the latter end of the year the Education Committee
authorised the doubling of the time of our Dental Surgeons : this
it was not possible to give effect to during 1918, but their increased
work will be recorded in the Annual Report for 1919.
The incidence of influenza upon Croydon seriously affected the
schools, but this is dealt with in the general report on the public
health of the Borough.
The report, although mainly tabular, is largely selfexplanatory
and the opportunity of proper analysis of the school
medical work afforded by the return of staff to the department in
1919 will enable a more adequate survey to be made by me in the
report for that year.
Yours faithfully,
R. VEITCH CLARK,
School Medical Officer and Medical Officer of Health
for the County Borough of Croydon.
