people who are normally resident in the Urban District and who
died outside the area.
Scarlet Fever.
26 notifications of this disease were received during the year,
this figure being one less than in 1961. Four of these cases were
treated in hospital, largely because of unsuitable home conditions.
No deaths from this disease were recorded.
Smallpox and Vaccination.
As mentioned in last year's report, cases of this virulent disease
were imported into the country in late 1961 and early 1962.
This district was fortunate to escape without any case occurring,
although it was necessary to keep under surveillance one contact
of a known case. A great deal of work devolved on the
department following the outbreak. A few suspected cases were
examined in conjunction with local General Practitioners. Very
many questions regarding vaccination had to be dealt with and
for persons travelling abroad no fewer that 3,699 International
Vaccination Certificates were countersigned compared with 482
in 1961. Members of the staff are vaccinated against smallpox at
regular intervals.
In addition to the cases imported from Pakistan, six other
ships with suspected cases on board arrived in this country during
the year with passengers or members of the crew who proceeded
to this district. It was necessary to investigate the health of these
persons and in some cases to keep them under surveillance for a
period of time.

The following table, which has been furnished by the County Medical Ofiicer, shows the smallpox vaccination figures for 1962, based on the return submitted to the Ministry of Health.

three being recorded.
