Cesspool Emptying
Concurrent with its policy of abolishing cesspools when possible,
the Council instituted an emptying service. In the first complete
year of its operation, 1,098,400 gallons were removed from
a total of 239 cesspools. In 1962 the comparative figures were
1,086,400 gallons from 134 cesspools. From its inauguration in
1954, the use of the service increased until a maximum amount of
1,549,200 gallons was disposed of in 1960. The figure dropped
to 1,220,000 in 1961, which year coincided with the abolition of
a large number of cesspools.

Details of the operation of the service in 1962 are as follow:—
