SECTION C.
SANITARY AND ENVIRONMENTAL
CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA.
AGRICULTURE (SAFETY, HEALTH AND WELFARE
PROVISIONS) ACT, 1956.
There are only some 28 premises in the district, which come
under the classification of agricultural holdings. The duties of the
Council under the above Act are minimal and confined to securing
the provision of suitable sanitary accommodation.
Twenty-one visits were paid to these holdings and no action
was found to be necessary.
CESSPOOLS.
In 1954 the Council laid down the policy that premises with
cesspool drainage, which could readily be connected to main sewers
should be given facilities to do so. This programme came to an
end in 1961 and during seven years some 261 cesspools are known
to have been abolished. A further 13 were discontinued in 1962.
Most of the remaining properties not connected to the public
sewers are in relatively rural parts of the district, whilst a few
cannot be dealt with, due to difficulties of levels. For these reasons
a very small number of new cesspools are brought into use each
year, and in 1962, two were constructed.
In a number of instances a single cesspool receives effluent
from two or more premises, whilst in a few cases individual houses
are drained to more than one cesspool.
The present position is:—
