Many of the inhabitants of the Urban District travel daily to
the central area of the Metropolis, and spend much of their time in
what may well be the most densely built up area in the world.
It is therefore of particular importance that facilities should be
available for them to obtain outdoor recreation in the summer evenings
or on long weekends, which are now available to so many.
In this connection, the district is most fortunate. Although
urban in character, a significant part lies within the Metropolitan
Green Belt, and comprises country lanes, open fields and orchards.
Again, the Commons of Chislehurst and St. Paul's Cray bring
woodland to the doorsteps of many houses.
For those who wish to spend their leisure in more active
pursuits, the Council alone provides in its parks and open spaces,
no fewer than 26 football pitches, 3 hockey grounds, 18 cricket
pitches, 18 tennis courts and 3 netball pitches.
