SANITARY AND ENVIRONMENTAL
CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA.
AGRICULTURE (SAFETY, HEALTH AND WELFARE
PROVISIONS) ACT, 1956.
This Act places on local authorities the duty of securing the
provision and maintenance of sanitary accommodation for the use
of employees on agricultural holdings. The number of agricultural
holdings within the district which come under the terms of this Act,
is limited.
Forty-five visits have been paid to the 29 premises. Sanitary
accommodation was found to be insufficient in five cases and other
defects were discovered in two instances. These matters received
remedy.
CESSPOOLS.
Four new cesspools have been installed during the year, two
of which were for new buildings where access to a sewer is not
possible, and two in respect of improvements to existing private
dwellings. Ten cesspools have been abolished.

In a number of cases two or more properties drain to one
cesspool. There are also several premises provided with small
sewage disposal plants and a few using chemical or earth closets.
The total number of cesspools in use in the district is now 309.
During the year, a short length of sewer was constructed in
Sevenoaks Way, providing main drainage to five dwellings
previously on cesspools. It is hoped that sewerage works, to be
carried out in 1960, in North Cray and in the Leesons Hill area,
will effect a substantial decrease in the premises using cesspool
drainage.
The Council's cesspool emptying service continues to find
favour and in spite of a small decrease in the total number of
cesspools use of the service is on the increase. Not only are more
