SHOPS ACT, 1950.
The number of shops within the meaning of the Act, existing
at the 31st December, 1957, was 846. They are situated as
follow :—
Lamorbey and Blackfen 259
Sidcup and Footscray 286
North Cray and St. Paul's Cray 97
Chislehurst and Mottingham 204
846
This represents an increase and is due mainly to the opening
of shops on the Royal Park Estate and on Sidcup Hill.
There is evidence that in a few cases shops permitted to open
in the afternoon of the early closing day, or on Sundays, for trade
in certain commodities have been selling other articles. Warnings
have been issued where necessary.
No Closing Orders have been made in the district. The
general closing days vary throughout the area and are as follow :—
Wednesday—St. Paul's Cray Estate (except Leith Hill), Chislehurst,
The Oval, Lamorbey, Lewis Road, Sidcup.
Thursday—Sidcup area, other than above.
A few shops open on the usual early closing day and remain
closed on Saturday afternoon.
The Council decided to use its powers to suspend the general
closing hours of shops prior to Christmas, but general observation
did not reveal that advantage was taken of this concession.
Visits and observations total 500.
The following infringements of the Act have been dealt with.
