Chalk Pit, Ruxley.
As mentioned in my last Annual Report, it had been decided
on grounds of Public Health that no more than 31 families could
be permitted to use this restricted site.
In spite of this, 17 additional families not possessing a licence
were in residence there.
The owner of the site has intimated that it is his intention to
apply to the Court for an injunction restraining the persons
concerned from using the site.
Corke's Meadow, St. Paul's Cray.
Corke's Meadow is used by some 109 families, none of whom
possess licences. The site, which is under private ownership, is
required by the London County Council for industrial purposes.
As a prelude to any action which it might be decided to take,
a number of surveys were carried out during the year, with a view
to ascertaining the type of dwelling used by occupants, their mode
of life, etc.
The position is a very complex one owing to the varying types
of structures used as dwellings, and the individual requirements
of the families resident. Businesses are carried on, usually of a
domestic nature, but in one instance on a large scale.
Consultations at various levels have taken place with the
London County Council and the Kent County Council. Conferences
have been arranged by the Minister of Housing and Local
Government with a view to securing an agreed policy as to the
best methods to be employed.
Towards the end of the year, a considerable volume of Press
publicity was given to the general conditions at Corke's Meadow.
Every effort is being made to reach a prompt solution to the
problem.
