AREA AND POPULATION.
The District has an area of 8.950 acres, the Rateable Value
is £534,382, and the sum represented by a penny rate is £2,150.
The population as estimated by the Registrar-General for
mid-year 1938 was 61,750, as compared with 58,670 last year.
VITAL STATISTICS.
BIRTHS.
During the year 1.038 Births were registered as belonging
to the District, of which number 545 were males and 493 were
females. This is equal to a Birth Rate of 16.8 per thousand of
population, as compared with 16.9 last year.
The Birth Rates for England and Wales were 15.1 for 1938
and 14.9 for 1937.
The number of Births registered as being illegitimate was
28, of which 13 were males and 15 were females.
There were also 27 stillbirths, 11 males and 16 females.
DEATHS.
The number of Deaths registered during the year as
belonging to this District was 526 (291 males and 235 females),
as compared with 515 last year.
This number includes those deaths which, although occurring
outside, belonged to this District, but excludes deaths
occurring inside but belonging to other districts.
The Death Rate for the year was equal to 8.5 per thousand
of population, as compared with 8.7 last year.
The Death Rates for England and Wales were 11.6 for 1938
and 12.7 for 1937.
The diseases claiming the largest number of deaths were:
Heart Disease 135, Cancer 92, Pulmonary Tuberculosis 32, and
Pneumonia 31.
