is collected separately by means of some 400 communal
bins placed in the streets, and these are emptied twice
weekly. All kitchen waste is sent to the Woolwich
Borough Council's Concentrator Plant at White Hart
Lane.
On the 1st April a bonus scheme was instituted,
whereby the men engaged on refuse collection and disposal
are paid 15 per cent, of the gross sales of salvage.
This undoubtedly had the effect of stimulating the men's
interest, and resulted in a considerable increase in the
amount of salvage collected.
The revenue from salvage sales during the year was £4,559 8s. 5d., made up as follows:—

INFESTATION ORDER, 1943,
Rodent control of surface infestations in the area is
carried out by one full time Rodent Operative, and the
test baiting and treatment of sewers by men under the
control of the Borough Engineer.
The method used is that approved by the Ministry
of Agriculture and Fisheries, namely prebaiting followed
by poison. The prebaits used are chiefly sausage rusk
and bread mash and the poisons zinc phosphide, arsenic
and red squill.
Infestations found during the year have chiefly been
of a minor character, and a high percentage were in
private dwellings where fowls, ducks, etc., were kept.
