Closet Accommodation.
With the exception of a few houses, all the closet
accommodation in the Borough is on the water carriage
system.
Public Cleansing.
Twelve cesspools were emptied a total of 22 times.
Refuse Collection and Disposal.
The collection and disposal of house refuse and the
collection of salvage is the responsibility of the Health
Committee, and the work is carried out by direct labour.
During the early part of the year there was some delay
in collection owing to weather conditions and sickness,
but during the remaining months it was possible to maintain
the period between collections at approximately one
week.
The position with regard to transport was eased by
the fact that three S. & D. Dust Carts were delivered
during the year, and a further two were placed on order
for delivery during 1949. It was, however, still found
necessary to use an open lorry for refuse collection, to
the obvious disadvantage of both the loaders and the
public. Six of the freighters in use are between 10 and
17 years old, and four of these were reconditioned during
the year in the Council's Workshop. Three of the remaining
six freighters were purchased in 1947 and three in
1948.
In addition to this, two Karrier lorries were delivered
during the year to replace worn out vehicles.
All house and trade refuse collected in the area is
disposed of by controlled tipping. This has for a number
of years been carried out at Bursted Wood, but"early in
December it was found impracticable to carry on at this
site, and tipping was recommenced on the East Wickham
site. The Council are at present acquiring further land
adjoining the latter tip which will meet the needs of the
area for a number of years.
A Muir-Hill Dumper of 2 cu. yds. capacity was
acquired for carting soil for covering the refuse.
Salvage. Salvage is collected by means of trailers
attached to the refuse collection vehicles, and seven new
trailers were purchased during the year. Kitchen waste
